Today Italy stands alongside Paris and New York at the pinnacle of the fashion world. Yet Italy's economy up until 1945 was predominately agricultural, and its couturiers produced little of influence in the milieu of economic ruin just after World War II. What accounts for Italy's meteoric ascent? The recognizable Italian look is generally thought to have originated in Milan in the late 1970s with designers such as Armani and Versace. However, Italy's fashion revolution dates decades earlier, to the postwar era as Americans ardently embraced Italian casual elegance. The ultimate arrival of Italian style is largely attributable to its nation's major companies being vertically integrated, orchestrating production from fiber to finished product, while retaining strong traditions of tailoring, family, and regional influence, now incorporating up-to-the-minute technology. Dr. Valerie Steele will discuss development of "the Italian Look" and the many renowned designers who have contributed to Italy's triumph. Anyone who has ever bought and loved an Italian suit, sweater or pair of shoes will relish her insight into Italy's most original couture system.
