The colour, creativity, and culture of the islands have been depicted in writings, drawings and designs from the first encounters with western civilizations by Christopher Columbus, through to the artistry of the master Gauguin, and big screen blockbusters such as Casino Royale and Pirates of The Caribbean.
Conceived from the principles espoused by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in recognition of global cultural diversity and dialogue, along with the desire to promote that cultural creativity through the expression of fashion and artisanship, Islands of the World Fashion Week will bring together designers of both clothing and accessories in a showcase of rich culture and creativity from the island states of the world.
In one major event of global proportions designers will present their fashions and accessories influenced by their rich island perspectives. The event will showcase both established and novice designers who have their origins in the islands of the world, with particular attention to those considered developing islands. A significant component of the Week will be the opportunity for the designers to showcase their designs to a "market" of buyers from around the globe. They will also have the opportunity to be featured in international fashion trade magazines, style columns of newspapers and journals, and interviews on national, regional, international and syndicated television networks.
The diversity of cultures represented by the numerous island states will be honoured by a special presentation of selected designers depicting their culture through fashion and fashion accessories. The theme of protecting the environment, on which many islands depend for both sustenance and economic development, will be interwoven with culture and fashion by the encouragement of designers to choose and incorporate into their designs materials, products, and processes which are natural and not harmful to the environment, or which depict social issues of global concern. The event will support these themes and initiatives through contributions to various charitable organizations involved directly in the areas identified, with particular focus on the islands of the world.
Recognition awards in the areas of Sustainable Eco-Fashion, Culture & Fashion, and for the Next Generation (New) Designer, including Seals of Excellence will highlight the event.Event type: Fashion Week
