ABSTRACT
I. The textile and apparel sector has a long-standing tradition in the Lyon region, born through the silk trade. This region unites a broad range of activities, from the production of raw materials to the manufacture of finished products (apparel, furnishing, industrial applications, and technical textiles). Rh ne-Alpes counts some 2,478 companies, and textile industry represents 46,000 direct jobs, a total turnover of USD 5.2 billion, and a value added of USD 1.6 billion.

II. ECONOMIC ASPECT

Activities in the textile sector in Rhone-Alpes are divided as follows (excluding apparel):

Weaving 51%
Knitted fabrics 19%
Dyeing & ennoblement 9%
Throwing 8%
Other branches 7%
Miscellaneous 6%

The four major fields of the Lyon textile industry are weaving, knitted fabrics, dyeing & ennoblement, and throwing. The Rhone-Alpes region provides a qualified workforce and invests in research and development. However, the clothing sector is experiencing some difficulty in Europe due to the globalization of trade and to relocation that has led to a sharp decrease in the number of employees.

III. FOREIGN TRADE

The textile sector in Rhone-Alpes is largely internationalized and has an export rate of 33,6 percent. United States exports to Rhone-Alpes, in USD thousand.
