ABSTRACT The French jewelry industry is composed of 177 companies employing more than 20 people for a total of 8,676 employees. Most of the companies employ between 20 and 50 persons, while only 5 companies employ more than 250 persons. In 1998, these companies generated a sales volume of USD 1,097 million. While Switzerland is France's most important market for jewelry, it is in large measure re-exported from there to other countries. Japan and the U.S. are the top markets for gold jewelry, while Benin is the top recipient of gold-plated jewelry.

The gold-plated jewelry sector includes costume jewelry, which is gold-plated or made of synthetic stones or pearls.
5. Pearls
Pearl necklaces and bracelets come in a wide range of shapes, colors and prices. The recent entrance into the market of fresh water pearls, which have more attractive prices, has stimulated sales of pearls and made their average price drop.
6. TrendsThe following demand trends can be identified for the year 2000: - grey gold combined with cultured or Tahiti pearl; - return of the diamond; - colored stones (peridot, blue topaz, tourmaline, citrine, and garnet); - mixture of colors as well as materials: polished and matte, smooth and sculpted; - in term of shapes, round gems and a variety of forms for settings.
