ABSTRACT
Of the $49 billion worth of sporting goods sold in Europe last year, $11 billion were retailed in Germany. The VDS, Association of German Sports Retailers, reported a 9% increase in sales for the first half of 1996. The sales jump has been attributed to a large extent to the popularity of in line skating which alone accounts for an annual sales volume of $529 million. Other areas of strong growth are to be found in exercise and fitness equipment, where sales grew by 13%, in outdoor clothing and in team fan accessories. The ski industry has been revived through the introduction of snow boarding and the current boom in carving or parabolic skiing. More traditional sporting sectors, however, such as tennis, badminton, and squash showed a decline in sales.
The positive outlook for retailers was not matched by the German sporting goods manufacturers. The BSI, German Sporting Goods Association, reports a sales decline in 1995 from $4.2 billion compared to $4.7 billion in the previous year. Among association members only 25% considered their business outlook to be positive; this was down from 39% in the previous year. The trade balance in sporting goods remained negative. Germany exports $1.1 billion while importing $2.8 billion. Imports from China ranked first, and exports to Switzerland took top position.

Germany is a very sports-minded nation. Twenty-four million German residents, almost 30% of the population, are registered with a sports club. The country's free enterprise orientation in economic policies and liberal import regulations make available a wideassortment of sporting goods. However, the German consumer is discerning. Only products which are truly competitive both in quality and price, innovativeness and which are placed on the market within the framework of a long-term marketing concept, usually requiring an agent or distributor, can provide a promise of substantial new orders.
The prospects for growth in Canadian sporting equipment are good assuming the above is borne in mind. Canada's prominence in a number of fields, especially in winter sports, is well recognized. More and more Germans are visiting Canada every year, which brings them into contact with what we have to offer. Canadian trainers in such disparate fields as hockey and basketball are present in Germany.

Below please find a review of several sectors of the sporting goods industry as well as contacts for marketing efforts.
Bicycle:

The German market for bicycles appears to have stopped its downhill slide of the past several years despite a 10% decline in sales expected for this year. The 80 million population of Germany is estimated to own 63 million bicycles. Sachs of Schweinfurt, Germany, is Europe's largest bicycle components manufacturer and anticipates sales in Germany of 4.7 to 5.1 million units in 1997. The German market consists of the following sectors and share sizes:
MTB Mountain Bikes 33%
Trekking-Touring Bikes 30%
Racing Bikes 4%
City Bikes 20%
BMX Bikes 3%
Bikes 2%
Children's Bikes 8%

Most bicycles in Germany, especially those offering new or advanced technologies, are sold through specialized retail stores. Although department stores and supermarkets frequently offer bicycles, these stores lack after-sales service. The specialized retail stores are generally stocked through either purchasing/retail cooperatives or importers. Below please find a list of the major bicycle purchasing cooperatives and well known importers.

Marketing Channels

In Europe in general and specifically in Germany, sales of sporting goods are dominated by the department store chains and the purchasing/retail cooperatives. Germany's largest department store, Karstadt, is aggressively expanding its sporting goods departments to take advantage of rare above average growth in retail sales which can be found in the sporting goods sector. 1995 sales of sporting goods were $1.32 billion -rival department store chain Kaufhof reported sales of $784 million. Sales of sporting goods by the two largest cooperatives, Intersport and Sport 2000, amounted to almost $3.3 billion through a combined total of over 2,000 sales outlets. Other important marketing channels are independent retail stores specializing in sporting goods as well as catalogue mail houses.

CDH German Commercial Agents Association
In Germany it is quite common for manufacturers to work with commercial agents or brokers representing several companies whose products are complementary. The agents are experts in their fields and have in-depth knowledge of the market. The CDH, Commercial Agents and Brokers Association, has over 22,000 members in all German provinces (Länder) and can assist you in finding suitable agents for your product range. It may be necessary in some instances to engage several sales agents to cover the various economic regions of the country. Please find attached a listing of the regional offices which are able to arrange contact with qualified representatives. It may be beneficial to place an advertisement describing your product (in German) in the association's bi-monthly publication, HV Journal. Any potential distributor or agent interested in future representation will be reading the journal. Publisher's address for the HV Journal is:

Product Certification
German and indeed European product safety regulations can prove to be a baffling maze. Exporters seeking market entry into Europe are in many instances legally obliged to perform testing and to obtain certification for their products. Other products may not require mandatory certification, but the absence of a certification label will dramatically impair product acceptance by the wholesale buyers and discerning end users. An example of mandatory certification is theEuropean Union (EU) directive on personal protective equipment (PPE) which also covers protective sports equipment. CE certification must be obtained for personal protective equipment before import and distribution of products into the EU can begin. For product certification we recommend the services of TÜV Product Service endorsed as a notified body for certification and testing. Please find attached copies from TÜV describing their services. TÜV Product Service can be contacted either at:
