ABSTRACT
The Dutch market for baby and children apparel is booming. In
1998, USD 700 million was spent by Dutch consumers on baby and
children apparel. The average spending per child increased by 11
percent to USD 260 per year. Turnover in this market is expected
to increase by 7 to 10 percent in the next two years.

The competition between independent shop owners and the 265
outlets of Dutch buying groups is strong. Dutch sporting goods
retailers form a new breed of competitors in this market. They
are becoming very popular outlets for buying new outfits for
young children.

In the future, smaller baby stores will focus more on gifts for
children and the larger baby specialty stores will focus on
competitive pricing or on offering a wide assortment. The
traditional children apparel retailer has to decide whether to
focus on kids in the 3-10 age group or teenagers in the 10-15
age group.

Dutch shops are relatively small in size. Of all children
clothing stores, 64 percent is smaller than 900 square feet.
The shop's location is becoming more important for the retailer.
Most of the baby and children apparel shops are located in city
centers and shopping malls. A few megastores of 5000 square
feet are located outside city centers. It is not expected that
many more will move their shop outside the city.

Dutch children are independent at an early age and decide more
often what they want to wear. Fifty-seven percent of the
children in the age of 4-7 choose their own clothing. In the
age group of children between 8 and 10, 68 percent decide what
they want to wear. In the age group of 11-14 years this rate
goes up to 75 percent.

In the growing Dutch market for children's apparel, brandnames
start to surface. An interesting development is the arrival of
designer collections for children like Young Versace, DKNY,
Armani, Kenzo and Dolce & Gabana.
