ABSTRACT According to the Main Statistical Office GUS, 1998 domestic production of furs and fur products was worth USD 40 million (60-70 thousand fur products), an increase of 14.4% over 1997. Industry experts estimate that production of fur products will grow by 10 to 15% in 1999. The best domestic manufacturers use only imported skins. Domestic production of leather apparel amounted to USD 24-28 million (400-500 thousands leather garments) in 1998. The production of fancy leather goods, bags and handbags amounted to USD 40 million. This segment broke down to handbags and travel bags u 40%, miscellaneous leather fancy articles u 34%, and non-leather bags and cases u 15%.
In 1998, the balance of payments for fur products resulted in a surplus for Poland. Exports of Polish fur products amounted to USD 6 million. About 45% of these exports went to Germany. The remaining importers were Belgium, Russia, Slovakia, and Canada. In 1998, imports of fur products into Poland amounted to USD 4 million. Austria was a major fur products supplier (over 60% of total fur product imports) followed by Germany, Belgium and Italy.
In 1998, the balance of payments for leather apparel and leather accessories resulted in a large surplus for Poland. Exports of these products reached USD 25 million. The major buyers were Germany, Italy, Belgium and Scandinavian countries. In 1998, imports of the same group of products amounted to USD 13 million mainly from China, Germany and Italy.
In 1998, exports of fancy leather goods, suitcases, bags, trunks, briefcases, wallets and leather accessories amounted to USD 20 million. The majority of exports went to Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands, and France. Imports of these products were higher and amounted to USD 42 million. China was a major supplier (65% shares) followed by Italy, Germany, Thailand, and Taiwan.
In 1998, GUS also reported USD 3 million worth of exports of saddlery products. Almost 70% of these exports went to Germany.
