ABSTRACT In 1998, the domestic production of fabrics was worth USD 2 billion and grew by 4% over 1997. Almost 40% of the domestic production of cotton and cotton-like fabrics were apparel fabrics, 20% - bed linen fabrics, and 13% - underwear fabrics. In the woolen fabrics sector, 75% were apparel fabrics. A similar proportion was reported in silk fabrics, including man-made silk. In the linen sector, the major segment was decorative fabrics (40%). Production of linen apparel fabrics is growing by 30%. Strong growth rates were reported in productions of draperies, laces and ornamental applications, and tulles (up 13 to 15%).
Investments in the fabric sector remain high. In the first 9 months of 1998, investments amounted to USD 100 million, an increase of 10% over the same period in 1997. Over 75% of investments were for machinery and new manufacturing technologies.
In 1998, the biggest Polish exports of fabrics were in fabrics made of staple synthetic fibers and amounted to USD 42 million, a 4% growth over 1997. The main importers were Germany and other Central and East European countries. Poland also exports fabrics made of synthetic filament yarns (USD 13 million annually), and fabrics made of processed staple filament (USD 6-7 million annually). The second biggest fabric export is wool valued at USD 27 million, an increase of 11% over 1997. Over 50% of combed wool went to Germany, Canada, and Italy. The major buyers of carded wool fabrics were Italy, Ukraine, and Germany. Exports of cotton fabrics in 1988 were worth USD 26 million, a 6% increase over 1997. The major purchasers of cotton fabrics were Germany, the Czech Republic, Great Britain, Sweden, France, and Denmark. Exports of linen fabrics in 1998 amounted to USD 14 million. The United States, Bulgaria, Italy and Germany were the major importers of Polish cotton fabrics. Exports of other fabrics in 1998 amounted to USD 70 million, of which 70% went to other Central and East European countries.
Imports into Poland of cotton fabrics dominated the total 1998 imports of fabrics, at USD 400 million, a 4% growth over 1997; about 84% of cotton fabric imports originated from EU countries, such as Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands. The second biggest group of imports is synthetic staple fiber fabrics, amounting to USD 270 million; the major suppliers were Germany, South Korea, the Netherlands, France, Italy, and Taiwan. Imports of fabrics made of synthetic filament yarns and processed continuous filament amounted to USD 400 million. Imports of carded and combed wool fabrics in 1998 amounted to USD 200 million; EU countries supplied almost all of these imports. Poland also imported flax fabrics (USD 20 million in 1998) as well as silk fabrics (USD 6 million in 1998); the main suppliers of both fabrics were Germany and Italy. The 1998 Polish imports of knitted fabrics amounted to USD 225 million and grew by 11% over 1997; EU countries were the leading suppliers (87% of total Polish imports of knitted fabrics).
