ABSTRACT
The outdoor leisure industry in South Africa is
characterized by increased growth. This growth has been noted in
both leisure activities as well as leisure apparel. The South
African tourism and adventure market has, since 1994, been
exposed to global trends with respect to equipment used and
services offered. The variety of adventure activities has also
expanded to meet the trends that are being set in the U.S. and
European markets. This has resulted in the exposure of the South
African market to international adventure apparel.

BACKGROUND: Tourism and adventure are the fastest growing
sectors of the South African economy, growing at an annual rate
of 12%. The variety in outdoor adventure activities that are
offered by the South African environment has attracted visitors

participate in the chosen activity. These activities include:

Fishing;

Hunting;
Nature conservation;
Hanggliding/parachuting;
Canoeing;
Hiking/mountain climbing;
River rafting yachting; etc.

There are predicted to be 5.7 million tourists/adventure seekers
participating in the South African economy by the end of 2000.
Of these, approximately 3.0 million will be foreign. South
Africa's variation in climatic conditions, both between winter
and summer as well as within regions, adventure activities
require the correct protective apparel.
