ABSTRACT The Saudi market presents excellent opportunities for old and new-to-market U.S. apparel manufacturers and suppliers. The lower end of the apparel market is dominated by inexpensive imports from Southeast Asian countries. Imported apparel represents 94 percent of the total Saudi market, estimated at over one billion U.S. dollars in 1998.
The Saudi apparel market is segmented by up-scale, mid-level, and lower-end markets. Well-known international designer names are already very popular and highly sought after. French, Italian, and lately German designer clothes are attracting new buyers in the upper scale market. Fashion-conscious clientele often visit designer-name boutiques that only carry their brands. Imports from these European countries, however, do not accurately reflect their market shares because much designer-name clothing is purchased and shipped from countries with low labor costs.
The extremely hot climate of Saudi Arabia, coupled with high humidity in the coastal areas, prompts high demand for light fabrics. The best prospects for sales of U.S. products are light and medium weight cotton, polyester-cotton blends, and virgin wool. Silk apparel is also valued for its lightweight qualities and because it enjoys a traditional cultural demand in Saudi. Given the growing Saudi population, the children's clothing sector is experiencing increasing sales. More than half of the Saudi population, currently estimated at 18 million including several million expatriates, is under age sixteen. In addition, the Kingdom hosts approximately two million religious pilgrims annually; many of whom make purchases from Saudi Arabia' s well-stocked apparel markets.
Recently, there has been a growing number of retail shopping centers in and around major urban centers. The number and quality of apparel outlets in these centers have increased from low-end stocks to high-end designer name lines. Recently, a number of boutique-type retail outlets have emerged in Saudi Arabia which specialize in particular high-end brands. This o franchiseo selling technique appears to be a good marketing model for other American manufacturers wishing to establish a presence and increased market share in Saudi Arabia.
The import duty for apparel is 12 percent. Imports should have a certificate of origin, and all documents should be attested by the Saudi Embassy or its consulates in the United States.
Price competitiveness of U.S. manufactured goods, because of the relatively weak dollar via-a-vis European currencies and the Yen, and Saudi appreciation for oMade in USAo products are promising growth factors for U.S. apparel products. Since the U.S. market share is already relatively small, American suppliers can capture a much larger slice of the apparel market by introducing designer-name apparel to the upper-to-middle range market. Few U.S. designer names exist in the Saudi market today relative to those from Europe.
