ABSTRACT Textiles and shoes together account for 20 percent of total Portuguese exports. The U.S.A. is the fifth most important destination of these exports.
The top ten importers of Portuguese textiles are: France (15.9 percent), U. Kingdom (15.7 percent), Spain (15.2 percent), Germany (14.9 percent), U.S.A. (7.1 percent), Holland (5.1 percent), Italy (4.5 percent), Sweden (3.2 percent), Denmark 2.6 percent), and Belgium. The textile industry, with 8,500 companies employing 234,000 workers, exports 59.6 percent of its production.
The top ten importers of Portuguese shoes are: Germany (25.5 percent), France (21.3 percent), U. Kingdom (20.5 percent), Holland (9.3 percent), U.S.A. (4.1 percent), Denmark (3.6 percent), Sweden and Belgium (with 2.6 percent each), Spain (2.4 percent), and Norway (1.2 percent). The shoe industry, with 1,500 companies employing 55,000 workers, exports 85 percent of its production.
