ABSTRACT Jeans have been a popular choice of clothing for North American youth for numerous decades. Now more than ever, jeans are becoming increasingly fashionable as different patterns, cuts, fabrics and colors make them unique and stylish to wear. In the last year, more jeans were bought at jeans/unisex stores in Canada than in any other retail channel. U.S. companies exporting jeans to Canada should be aware of this latest trend in planning their distribution strategy in the Canadian apparel market. RETAIL JEANS MARKET OVERVIEW
Undeniably, jeans are the most widely chosen clothing item amongst teenagers. Teenagers of all backgrounds and styles find exactly what they need in them, apparel that is both durable and more fashionable. Whether the jeans are stonewashed, slim-fit, baggy, white, black, multicolored, dazzled or made of the latest rubberizing fabric, with them teenagers can express their own personalities, evolving characters and mood changes. What is the "in"style one year will most likely not part of the "in"style the following year, making the jeans industry highly competitive and fast changing. What is significant for U.S. companies in the jeans industry to know is that teenagers know exactly where to shop to get the latest look they want. MARKET SIZE AND U.S. IMPORTS
According to Trendex, in 2000 the total jeans retail sales to teenagers (13-19 years old) in Canada was estimated at US$ 75 million for teenage males and US$ 72 million for teenage girls. Moreover, the total jeans market in Canada was estimated to be US$ 861 million in retail sales. In 2000, US exports of blue denim jeans to Canada were valued at US$ 43 million. SALES DISTRIBUTION OF JEANS RETAILERS
Trendex's recent market data demonstrated that, from June 2000 to June 2001, teenagers purchased more jeans at "jeans/unisex specialty stores"than anywhere else. This accounts for more than half of total jeans retail sales in the Canadian market for consumers between the ages of 13 and 19. Namely, 46.3 % of male teenagers bought their jeans in "jeans/unisex specialty stores"and 59.5 % of female teenagers. The second most popular retail channel chosen varies according to gender, where teenager males prefer to buy their jeans at "discount stores"(19.8 %) where their female counterparts will prefer to buy at "all other specialty stores"(17.7 %).
"Department stores"followed in both the teenager male and female sales of jeans with 10.2 % and 7.1 %, respectively, and lastly "all other outlets"with 5.8 % and 2.2 %. IMPLICATIONS FOR U.S. COMPANIES U.S. companies exporting jeans should be aware of Canadian teenagers' strong inclination to purchase their jeans in "jeans/unisex specialty stores"when strategizing their distribution efforts in Canada. These smaller retailers are better able to service the changing tastes of teenagers who are constantly looking for different styles and trends.
