ABSTRACT
Italy is home to the world's leading tanning industry. It produces 15 percent of the world's production of all types of leathers and 60 percent of the European production. Italian tanneries are very much internationally oriented, working, for the most part, with foreign suppliers and clients. With almost 2,200 firms employing 25,000 people and one third of the industry concentrated within the region of Tuscany, the sector is doing well again, after the turmoil caused by the European livestock epidemics, which drastically cut meat consumption and the access to raw materials. Consumers are returning en masse to demanding articles in leather, both in the luxury and in the economical range. The secret of the Italian tanning industry are its quality and the style of the finished leather goods.

Approximately 650 tanneries are operating in the Vicenza provice, 900 in the region of Tuscany, 350 in Solofra (province of Avellino) and almost 100 in Turbigo-Castano Primo (province of Milan). The nine hundred tanneries located in Tuscany are mainly concentrated in the Santa Croce area between Pisa and Florence.
Since the Italian tanning sector is almost wholly comprised of small to medium-sized companies, it is very important for them to be members of the UNIC association (The National Union of Tanning Industry) which has close ties with other associations in the leather sector such as: ANCI (Italian Association of Footwear Manufacturers), AIMPES (Italian Association of Leather Goods Manufacturers) to give a more complete service to its customers.

In the year 2000, the Italian tanning sector exported 159 million sq. meters of tanned leathers reaching a value of US Dols. 3.4 billion, consisting of 47.5 percent of the total sale turnover. European markets absorb 60 percent and the Far East absorb 30 percent of leathers tanned in Italy. Footwear, furnishings, clothing and leather goods manufacturers are the main end-users. Two thirds of the raw materials used by the Italian tanning industry were imported from abroad.
+Lineapelle+, the most important exhibition of leather raw materials, such as tanned hides and skins, accessories, components, synthetics for footwear, leather goods, leatherwear and furnishings, was most recently held in Milan on November 6-8, 2001. Over 1,500 firms exhibited in almost 50,000 sq. meters including 1,035 Italian and 487 foreign firms. Forty different countries were represented. At the Bologna fair, visitors gained a clear picture of the trends of the leather sector and learned that the emergency and the anxieties of the past months will end "soon and well", according to the Fair organizer.
This is a sector were U.S. goods do well as there is demand in Italy for U.S. and other foreign hides and skins. With no domestic supply of alligator skin at hand, Italian shoe and purse makers have come to depend on the Southern United States. Alligator skin, a major star in the Italian leather goods industry, accounts for 60 percent of Italy's total raw reptile hide imports, and half of its total value of tanned reptile hides. All hide must get certifications from the United Nations Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species. Still, U.S. alligator hides must have all their paperwork in order to prove that the animals were harvested in accordance with the laws designed to protect their presence in swamps.
