ABSTRACT
There are 12 registered shoe factories throughout the Kingdom producing about 5 million pairs of shoes annually or about 25 percent of the local market demand. The remaining 75 percent is imported from several international markets including Italy, China, Spain, France, Turkey, Lebanon, Egypt, Thailand, Greece, Korea, Brazil, and USA. Total market value reached over $400 million in 2000.

There is fierce competition in the Saudi footwear market between different importers and with the domestic industry. Some local firms have recently closed. Far-Eastern companies export low quality shoes at low prices. U.S. and European companies export high quality shoes with high prices. The US footwear brands already represented in the Saudi market includes Sketcher, Redwing, Sebago, Cat, Nike, Reebok, and Adidas. Leisure shoes, chaldern's shoes and athletic shoes are all important market sectors.

Given the Saudi government's desire to increase local footwear production, the Saudi Shoe industry is expected to expand over the coming years to include leather shoes, sports and leisure shoes. However, US exporters of footwear are still encouraged to consider the Saudi market. Many local companies are looking for new firms to represent in Saudi and Gulf markets.
