ABSTRACT
The year 2000 has been very positive for the overall textile and apparel industry in Italy and the forecast for the current year appears equally promising. The strength of the dollar has greatly favored exports of "made in Italy" products to third countries. The latest figures show that the value of exports of apparel and textile products have increased by 14.9% reaching a total of 52,371 billion lire, while imports have increased by 19.2% thus totaling 25,507 billion lire. The positive balance was 26,864 billion lire, with an increase of 11.2% compared to the year 1999.
Exports

Exports of overall textile products have increased in value by 17.2% and more specifically, the yarns sub-sector has increased by 23%, and the fabrics sub-sector has increased by 13.6%. Within the yarn sector, notable export increases have been obtained by chemical continuous yarn (+23%), chemical flock (+24.1%) and woolen yarn (+22.9%), while cotton fabrics have increased by 20% and woolen fabrics have increased by 15.9%.

Similarly, the apparel sector indicates an overall increase in value of 13.1%, with a leading role being obtained by the aggregated apparel, leather, and buttons sectors which have increased by 16.2% while hosiery has increased by 9.5%.

The countries which have shown to be more receptive to Italian apparel and textiles are the United States, with an increase of 25.3% in sales value, thus confirming America's position as the third largest importer, with an overall share of 9.8%. Exports to Spain have increased by 16.9% and to Japan by 16.1%. EU countries continue to be the leading market for Italian textiles and apparel, and account for 54.2% of all exports, with a 7.9% increase over the previous year. After a few years of slow-down, Far Eastern markets show a positive trend for Italian exports and indicate remarkable increases in countries such as: Hong Kong (+34.5%) South Korea (+83.1%) Taiwan (+10.4%), Singapore (+38.3%); Thailand and the Philippines (+60%).

Imports:

Imports of textiles have increased by 19.3% during the year 2000, which broken down by sub-sectors indicate the following: yarns: (+28%) and fabrics (+14.5%). Notable increases are reported for woolen yarns (+46.4%) and cotton yarns (+30.5%); while silk fabrics have increased by 42.6% and woolen fabrics by 20.7%.

Total imports of apparel show an overall increase of 19.1%, with a peak in imports of knits and hosiery of 19.6%. The aggregated sectors of apparel+leather+buttons report an increase of 18.7%.

The sharp 37.9% increase in imports from China is noteworthy, as China is the leading supplier to the Italian market, and accounts for 10.1% of total imports. Germany and France have also increased their shares, to 9.9% and of 8.5% respectively. Romania, Tunisia and Turkey come fourth, fifth and sixth and account for a total of 15%. Imports from EU countries have indicated a stable increase, after having gone through a set-back in 1999. Particularly positive has been the trend of yarns, of woolen fabrics and silk fabrics.

US position in the Italian market:

Though the share held by imports of US made products is limited and is mostly restrained to those companies with well established brand name recognition, the local consumer is very eager to experiment with new and innovative fashion trends. There is a niche market for those US companies known as trend setters and can contribute with new fashion designs and technical fabrics to the very sophisticated Italian market.
