ABSTRACT This report provides a brief overview of Northwest Russia's footwear market, as well as contact information for major distributors in St. Petersburg. Topic text continues in para. 2. End Summary.
1. GOLD/SILVER KEY SERVICES AND WEBSITE: The U.S. Commercial Service (CS) in St. Petersburg, part of the American Consulate General, encourages U.S. companies wishing to do business in St. Petersburg and NW Russia to utilize its Gold Key Service. Experienced Commercial Specialists identify opportunities, arrange business appointments with pre-qualified Russian agents and distributors, and accompany you to the meetings. Gold Keys cost $400 for a full day of appointments (typically 6), and $150 per additional day. Driver and professional interpreter services are strongly encouraged and charged at cost. CS requires sufficient company literature and price lists at least three weeks prior to the desired appointment dates, and accepts payment by VISA, MasterCard, American Express and Discovery cards. Additionally, as part of CS' regional program with Commercial Service offices in Scandinavia and the Baltics, CS St. Petersburg will be happy to share your Gold Key inquiry with these offices, who may contact you directly. CS St. Petersburg's Silver Key Service provides a list of at least 10 quality contacts, contact information verified - but interest not vetted, for $100. For more information about CS St. Petersburg services and programs, please visit: http://www.usconsulate.spb.ru/fcs.
2. Before the August 1998 financial crisis in Russia, imports dominated the footwear market. In 1999-2000, as in other industries, the market share of domestically produced shoes somewhat increased although imports of footwear are still considerable. According to a survey conducted by the St. Petersburg University of Technology and Design, the current market is relatively balanced in terms of supply and demand, because the population's expendable income is still rather low.
3. In 1999, average retail prices on shoes grew by 47 percent. Currently, prices continue to grow but at a lower rate. During the first six months of 2000, average prices on shoes grew by 27 percent, including 39 percent for men's shoes and 50 percent for women's shoes.
4. In Russia's different regions, retail prices on shoes vary, with the national baseline for women's shoes at $44. In southern Russia, prices reach as high as $130. In St. Petersburg, average retail prices are slightly lower than the national average. 5. The footwear market in St. Petersburg is led by Italian suppliers, with 45-50 percent of the total market. Considerable market share also belongs to Germany, Belarus, Finland, Turkey, China, and domestic production. Chinese manufacturers have the lead in imitation leather footwear.
6. The University of Technology and Design's survey, which included eight supermarkets, 54 specialized stores, and 10 trade centers, also revealed that 44 percent of shoe models currently on sale are of Italian make and only nine percent are made in Russia. U.S. companies supply primarily athletic and casual wear shoes. Brand names of U.S. dress shoes are almost entirely absent from the market.
