ABSTRACT
During the past decade the outdoor clothing industry has gained a lot of importancein Switzerland. New types of outdoor activities, such as inline skating and snowboarding, have lead to the development of novel types of personal clothing described as "functional wear." Consumers were quick to discover the advantages and comfort of functional wear also for use in every day life. This helps to explain the sales growth reported by relevant retailers and manufacturers throughout Switzerland. Ten years ago, outdoor sports retailers used to live almost exclusively from the sale of equipment. Now, outdoor clothing (functional wear) represents some 50 to 80 percent of their total sales. Consumers, particularly young people, are brand conscious and relevant clothing is a MUST in most trendy sports.
According to the Swiss Sports Retailer Association ASMAS, Switzerland's outdoor market was about to top SF. 300 million in 1998 (latest figure available). This figure is composed of the following product groups:

Outdoor-clothing SFr.120
Hiking/Trekking Shoes 80
Rucksacks 35
Sleeping Bags 15
Tents 15
Accessories 35
Total SFr.300

The hiking shoes segment is split into 70 % trekking shoes, 26 % multi-functional shoes and 4 % sandals. A total of 600,000 pairs of outdoor shoes were sold during 1999.

Approximately 150,000 hiking rucksacks were sold. The number of daypack rucksacks is certainly larger, however, it is difficult to determine due to the various sales channels.

Strong growth in the Swiss outdoor market is expected to continue in clothing while less growth is anticipated in the equipment market. There, an emphasis on quality will be important.
