ABSTRACT
This report describes the trends in the denim clothing market in Singapore. The size of the clothing market was estimated at US$520 million in 1999 compared to US$411 million in 1998. Imports totaled US$1.7 billion, of which 1.3%, or about US$22 million, came from the United States.

Denim, especially dark indigo denim, seems to be becoming more in vogue in Singapore. A wide range of denim clothing from jeans to jackets is available here. According to the buyers of traditional denim jeans, from brands such as Replay to Guess?, deep blue denim is re-gaining popularity. The manager of Replay projects an average growth of 20% in the denim business this year compared to the 20% drop in business in the last two years. Even high fashion designer brands like Anna Molinari for the Bluemarine label, newcomer Evisu, Atsuro Tayama and Moschino are presenting their current collections in denim.

Basic jeanswear is also being colored with tints from pink to turquoise and stitched with embroidery, beads etc. Even Levi's is introducing new lines to keep up with the increased demand for jeanswear. The local agent for Levi's for 30 years, reports that its best-selling Levi's is the "engineered" jeans that are made of a stiff but soft denim, cut with a patented bias style and, looks tight but does not cut off the circulation. This range is the second in a series of new products after 1999's Vintage Clothing line and before 2000's Red Label. Its competitors are trendy brands like Evisu, Fubu, Moschino, Roberto Cavalli and A/T by Keiji Itakura.

Prices of jeans range from Levi's "engineered" jeans at US$65.95 to more than US$1,176 for the latest feathered, printed and beaded designer jeans from Roberto Cavalli or Voyage. The demand for deluxe denim is so high that Moschino has increased its prices of jeans by 40% from US$87.65 to US$122.95.
