ABSTRACT After several years of stagnation on the Swiss lingerie market, the future expectations have once again become more positive. Local production of lingerie covers about 30 percent of the Swiss market. Imports are dominated by Germany, Austria, Italy, France and Portugal. The US has a market share of about 2 percent. The outlook for high quality, comfortable materials and design products, at competitive prices, represent the main growth prospects for the foreign suppliers.
The following overview will give some ideas of the fashion tendencies which compete in this market.
The lingerie industry orients itself more and more to apparel fashion trends. Luxury and modern feminity are major themes of the winter 2000/01 apparel and dessous fashion. Fine and high quality materials, such as mercerized cotton, pure silk and soft mixtures of cotton and silk are processed and the contemporary feminity is underlined by modern microfiber materials and a fashionable touch of "noble" gleam. Life-style and comfort thoughts are clearly expressed in the lady's apparel and underwear fashion. The lingerie fashion brings two main trends for the winter 2000/01. On one hand "New Romance," which puts an accent on feminity has become a slogan. Decent decorations and luxury are the focal point of these collections. On the other side purism is propagated, which convinces with simple styles, comfortable "wellness" materials and innovative seamless technologies.
The trend to more feminity is interpreted as "New Romance" which presents designs that are modern, decent, luxurious, and feminine. Decorations are also getting a completely new face. Fashionable laces, allover embroideries with sophisticated motifs and printed tulles are again in vogue. The comfort effect, which is an important element of this fashion trend, is confirmed with thin elastic embroidered decorations on bras, slips, panties and undershirts. A clear and simple style, soft materials and seamless finishings feature the Purism trend. The dominant colors of this line are white, black, skin colors and a few colorits such as khaki, red and night blue. Decorating details in the form of metal elements or paste pearls on straps and transparent insets influence the collections.
Materials
The materials show two main tendencies. On one hand the manufacturers put more and more on soft and thin microfibers, which are the wellness materials par excellence. Meryl, Lyocell, Modal, Tactel and Tencel are the magic words of this line. On the other hand mercerized, high quality cotton and their mixtures play an important role. The luxurious models often present in pure silk and silk/cotton mixtures. Colors
Firm colorits from earthy terracotta colors over "fire engine" red and other nuances of strong red to bluish berry colors and deep dark "grape" colors such as ruby and bordeaux form the fashion picture. Grey nuances, smoky pastels such as rose and raspberry, the palette of skin colors, and sand and olive complete the collections. Styles
"Seamless" technologies boom on the commercial bodywear market with a variety of seamless collections. Animal prints seem to be a long-term theme of the winter collections. Structured textiles show the new optics to advantage. The New Romantic's decorations are put on with a lot of sensitivity: very thin and decent motifs, which give a sophisticated look.
Printed and embroidered tulle materials are also celebrating their come back. Modern prints, which remind of bark and leaf structures, are very trendy. With the art prints looking like tattoos, there is also an attempt to cater to the younger generation.
Also jacquard qualities and flower prints will again be emphasized in the dessous collections. Flowers as prints or as motifs on laces and embroideries are the preferred theme of the lingerie designers. Dainty and girly flower prints are presented in strong colors. Metallic lustres, jacquards and changing optics are important and have the best effect on the new high-tech materials.
The winter lingerie industry takes the customers desire for wellness and comfort fully into account. The newly styled underwear also needs to have a good pass form, which gives optimal support and form and does not squash. Two further factors on the priority list, which have to be considered, are functionality and easy care.
