ABSTRACT The year 2000, which is the year of the golden dragon to the Chinese, is considered to be a year full of good luck. Since the cycle of the golden dragon comes once in every 60 years, many young couples decide to get married this year. Improvement of the Indonesian economic condition has further enhanced the decisions. This has created a boom in the Indonesian bridal gown industry.
Ms. Diana Yusuf Komala, the chairman of the Indonesian International Bridal Association (Asosiasi Pengusaha Gaun Pengantin Internasional Indonesia & Perlengkapannya/Apgapindo), estimated that in the year 2000 the bridal gown business will increase by 30% compared to 1999. Her prediction was already fulfilled at the February Mega wedding 2000 show in Jakarta. In the recent Show, each bridal house received an average order of 40 bridal gowns; while in the past, an order of 10 bridal gowns for each participating bridal house after a show was considered a good result. Some bridal houses expect a one hundred percent increase in their bridal gown orders for the year 2000.
Most bridal houses use accessories and materials from the U.S., Italy, France, England and Japan. Materials used for the bridal gowns are of plain, light and soft textures, such as soft matte organdy, matte satin, satin silk and matte-silk. Soft tulle is used for veils and trains. Gloves are still imported and they come in two lengths: short, reaching only to the wrist and full length up to the elbow. Popular accessories are crystal beads, crowns/coronets and necklaces. Since the monetary crisis began, some designers have reduced unnecessary details. There is a trend among bridal gown designers in Indonesia to turn from the glamorous to the simple and clean lines. The most popular wedding gowns have simple and slim designs such as princess line, A-line or mermaid line. The most popular colors are white, oak, crme and champagne. However, white is still the preferred choice.
